Time-resolved studies of radical pairs.

The effect of magnetic fields on chemical reactions through the RP (radical pair) mechanism is well established, but there are few examples, in the literature, of biological reactions that proceed through RP intermediates and show magnetic field-sensitivity. The present and future relevance of magnetic field effects in biological reactions is discussed.

Interference between femtosecond pulses observed via time-resolved spontaneous fluorescence

We study spontaneous fluorescence excited by a series of phase-controlled femtosecond pulses in an inhomogeneously broadened medium containing a frequency comb of sharp spectral holes. We show that evolution of the spontaneous fluorescence on picosecond time scale is sensitive to interference between the excitation pulses and that varying the relative phase between the excitation pulses changes...

Size Distribution Measurement of Candle\'s Soot Nanoparticles by Using Time Resolved Laser Induced Incandescence

Time resolved laser induced incandescence (LII) technique is used to measure size distribution of soot nanoparticles of candle's flame. Pulsed Nd:YAG laser is used to heat nanoparticles to incandescence temperature and the resulting signal is measured. Mass and energy balance equations are numerically solved to calculate temperature of soot particles in low fluence regime. Assuming Plank black ...

Mechanism of the Efficient Tryptophan Fluorescence Quenching in Human γD-Crystallin Studied by Time-Resolved Fluorescence†

Human gammaD-crystallin (HgammaD-Crys) is a two-domain, beta-sheet eye lens protein found in the lens nucleus. Its long-term solubility and stability are important to maintain lens transparency throughout life. HgammaD-Crys has four highly conserved buried tryptophans (Trps), with two in each of the homologous beta-sheet domains. In situ, these Trps will be absorbing ambient UV radiation that r...

Solvent-induced luminescence quenching: static and time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy of a copper(I) phenanthroline complex.

We present a static and picosecond X-ray absorption study at the Cu K-edge of bis(2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)copper(I) ([Cu(dmp)2](+); dmp = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) dissolved in acetonitrile and dichloromethane. The steady-state photoluminescence spectra in dichloromethane and acetonitrile are also presented and show a shift to longer wavelengths for the latter, which points to ...
